When I think about what has transformed me most in recent years, it isn’t routines or therapy or self-help books… it’s community. Real, messy, imperfect human connection. If you’ve ever felt unseen or alone, this is for you.

Building My Room “Vent Hideout” on TalkLife

Last year, I found refuge in the app Vent, a place where people could share their raw, unfiltered selves without judgment. That safe space held me together when nothing else did.

So I brought that spirit to TalkLife and created My own Room: Vent Hideout. The name isn’t just a label, it’s a sanctuary. A spot where venties could drop in and feel at home again. What started as a simple idea grew into something I treasure: a big, chosen family who has been present through tears, recovery, joy, and everyday life.

The Transformative Power of Presence

But healing doesn’t stop at screens.

At a recent meetup in the ER, I sat with an 80-year-old woman – no phones, no distractions – just us talking. She shared things she’d never told anyone else about her mental health. By the end, we exchanged phone numbers. She told me it was the first time she’d felt that someone truly listened.

It hit me how much just being with someone can change everything. Presence is powerful. Listening is transformative. Connection is everything.

Volunteering with Animais de Rua – Tiny Acts That Reach Deep

Last weekend, I joined Animais de Rua for their nationwide food drive – the Banco Solidário Animal. Volunteers stood outside grocery stores across Portugal asking for donations of cat and dog food. A small bag of kibble, a can or two – tiny acts that mean so much to animals in need.

What stayed with me was the kids. I saw parents say no – understandable given tight budgets. Then I watched children pleading, pulling at sleeves, begging. And sometimes, they won. They came back clutching small packs of food, eyes bright with pride. They gave me the bags, and I asked them to put them into the collection box like they were treasure.

Every time, I smiled and said:

“You just gave those kitties a lifeline today”

That child + a small donation + my words isn’t just a nice anecdote. It’s a quiet revolution. It’s learning that even little hands can make a difference. It’s families modeling care. It’s society waking up to compassion, one bag of food at a time.

To End

Let’s grow this. Let’s keep building safe spaces – online and offline. Let’s show our kids what empathy looks like. Let’s be present for someone who needs to be heard. Let’s volunteer not because we have to, but because we want to. Let’s keep saying:

“You gave those kitties a lifeline”
“Thank you for being here”
“Your presence matters”

Healing isn’t a solo journey. It’s a shared path.
